baldness

Baldness is to say the least uncomfortable for a lot of people that suffer from alopecia but that doesn’t have to be the case with scientific advancements that has made treatment options available.

However, the treatment options available are very expensive and some require hair grafting which a lot of people may not be able to afford. However, there is an unexpected cure that cancer researchers have stumbled on that they think may just be able to cure baldness. A topical cream to cure baldness or stop hair turning gray could soon be on the way.

The cells responsible for making hairs and giving them their charateristic colour were accidentally discovered by scientists at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center who were exploring how some cancer tumours form.

During the research process, the scientists removed the cells from mice and they realised that the mice became bald. They went on further to delete a gene in the cells and it resulted in the hairs of the mice turning to white.

Associate Professor of Dermatology Dr. Lu Le at UT Southwestern Medical Center who is one of the lead researchers said:

“Although this project was started in an effort to understand how certain kinds of tumours form, we ended up learning why hair turns gray and discovering the identity of the cell that directly gives rise to hair.”

“With this knowledge, we hope in the future to create a topical compound or to safely deliver the necessary gene to hair follicles to correct these cosmetic problems.”

The breakthrough from this research will most likely lead to the creation of treatments for baldness, balding and graying hair.

The study which was published in the journal Genes and Development is a welcome development for people experiencing baldness as it may offer a cheaper and more effective solution to their problem than what is currently available at the moment.
